Zone 0 and Wildfire Preparedness Take Center Stage at PPNA Fire Safety Forum

The Piedmont Pines Neighborhood Association hosted a Fire Safety Forum on June 1, bringing together residents and local leaders for an important discussion on wildfire preparedness in Oakland’s high-risk wildfire areas.

Speakers included Oakland City Councilmember Janani Ramachandran, Fire Chief Damon Covington, Assistant Fire Marshal Javan Smith, and representatives from the Oakland Firesafe Council. Topics included the implementation of California’s impending Zone 0 requirements, upcoming wildfire inspections, vegetation management efforts, emergency notifications, and community preparedness.

Zone 0 regulations require homeowners to maintain a noncombustible area within five feet of structures to help reduce the risk of home ignition during a wildfire. Oakland Firesafe Council President Wendy Goldsby presented on the science behind Zone 0, home hardening strategies, and the critical role defensible space plays in reducing wildfire risk.

The Oakland Fire Department also provided updates on wildfire inspections, vegetation management activities, and the importance of registering for AC Alert emergency notifications. Additional discussion covered goat grazing operations and fuel reduction efforts on city-owned properties.
