The Oakland Firesafe Council mourns the passing of Jerry Kent, a longtime leader, mentor, and trusted advisor in wildfire prevention and land management. Jerry’s deep knowledge of fire science, vegetation management, and the history of wildfire in the East Bay made him an invaluable resource to our organization and the broader wildfire safety community.
A former Assistant General Manager of the East Bay Regional Park District, Jerry dedicated more than four decades to protecting and expanding the region’s parks. During his career, he helped guide the Park District through periods of significant growth, major natural disasters, and the aftermath of the devastating 1991 East Bay Hills Fire. After retiring, Jerry continued his commitment to public safety through wildfire research, environmental advocacy, and community education.
“Jerry was our ‘Go-To Guy’ on anything to do with fire science and wildfire prevention,” said Sue Piper, Oakland Firesafe Council Co-Founder and Former President (Board Emeritus). “He provided expert advice to the Oakland Firesafe Council as we weighed in on the City of Oakland’s Vegetation Management Plan over the decade or more it took to complete. His expertise and low-key affability made him one of our favorite OFSC members and contributed greatly to the solid reputation of the Oakland Firesafe Council as a respected champion for residents in the Oakland Hills High Wildfire Hazard Zone.”
Jerry was also a dedicated member of the Claremont Canyon Conservancy Board and the East Bay FireSafe Alliance, where he worked alongside leaders from fire safe councils throughout the region. Henry DeNero and Jon Kaufman of the Claremont Canyon Conservancy described Jerry as an expert on wildfire history and prevention, with an unmatched understanding of the science behind how wildfires spread through the wildland-urban interface.
Jerry’s work helped shape important conversations about wildfire risk in Oakland, including vegetation management, hazardous fuels, and the need to address fire threats posed by invasive and highly combustible vegetation. His presentations, research, and guidance helped community leaders better understand the challenges facing the Oakland Hills and the steps needed to reduce risk.
Beyond his expertise, Jerry was known for his generosity, humility, and willingness to share his knowledge. His friends and colleagues across the fire safety community will deeply miss his wisdom and friendship.
Jerry’s legacy lives on in the parks he helped protect, the communities he supported, and the many people inspired by his lifelong commitment to making the East Bay safer.
