Join us for our monthly meeting where OFSC board members are in attendance along with other invited guests who can include representatives from the City of Oakland EMSD, OFD, CAL Fire, et al. Community advocates discuss current issues and concerns with regards to wildfire safety. Open forum, time permitting.
April’s special guest presentation is from UC Smart and Connected Communities: Evacuation Simulations and Gaming with Louise Comfort and UC Team:
Now in its third project year, researchers from the Smart and Connected Communities project funded by the National Science Foundation will present a brief summary of major findings to date for Oakland/Alameda County. This interdisciplinary, intercampus project includes researchers from three University of California campuses: Berkeley, Davis, and Santa Cruz. Kenichi Soga, Principal Investigator and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, UC Berkeley, with give a brief overview of the whole project. Paola LoRusso, doctoral student in engineering, UC Berkeley will demonstrate traffic modeling for evacuation in the Oakland Hills, and MJ Johns, doctoral student in Computer Science, UC Santa Cruz, will demonstrate a set of ‘serious games’ representing dilemmas that residents face when confronted with the threat of evacuation in areas at high risk of wildfire. There is more information to share from the project, and we plan to schedule a full community meeting that will include reports from all project activities for Alameda County in September 2025.
